PMC Administration to Keep an 'Eye' on Garbage Transportation Vehicles

Contractors had urged PMC administration to relax the requirement of installing GPS trackers on vehicles transporting by-products produced in waste plants.

Pune: The contractors had urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration to relax the requirement of installing geostationary satellite system (GPS trackers) on vehicles transporting by-products produced in waste plants.

However, the administration needs to keep an eye on when the vehicles come to the project, when they leave, and where the vehicles were emptied. Therefore, the proposal was rejected by the administration. It has also directed the contractors to ensure that the waste treatment plants continue to function at full capacity even after Diwali.

After the Diwali festival, the administration had held a meeting with the contractors to ensure that the city's garbage problem does not get serious. The contractors had demanded exemption as manpower was not available and vehicles fitted with geostationary satellite systems were not available.

The city has wet and dry waste treatment plants. There, waste is processed and a variety of by-products are made. It is further used to make fertilizer with biogas, biodiesel.

Plastic and rags are supplied as fuel to cement companies. The civic body charges the contractor per tonne for transporting these by-products. So they need to have control over every round.

In the absence of a geostationary satellite system, it is possible to control whether the vehicle went to the designated location or not, and how many trips they made.

At this meeting, the contractors have different vehicles each time to transport the by-products. Therefore, it is practically not possible to install a geostationary satellite system on every vehicle," he said.

After discussion, the administration made it clear that it was mandatory for each contractor to provide vehicles fitted with geostationary satellite systems. He also asked the contractors to install CCTVs at every project.

Instructions to contractors...
- After Diwali is over, the amount of waste increases, so the projects should be run at full capacity.
- At least one-third of the staff must be present on the project
- Keep the garbage transport floor empty in the morning session
- Garbage transport trains should be evacuated immediately, without stopping them.

- If the machinery is damaged, it should be repaired at night, so that the project can continue during the day.
- Don't let the stench of waste in the waste plant spread, dispose of the by-products immediately
- Instead of closing the project for lunch, some employees should be sent later for lunch.

After Diwali, the amount of garbage increases. The contractors have been instructed to process it early, to vacate the vehicles early, to ensure that the use of manpower is properly and the pace of work on the project is not slowed down. It has been said that it is mandatory for vehicles to have GPS to transport by-products, said Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner, Solid Waste Management Department
