Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering a plan to use treated water from the sewage treatment plant (STP) near Rajaram Bridge for irrigation in the Taljai Forest area.

This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution for watering the trees, particularly during the dry summer months when tankers are used to supply water.

According to Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., the proposal is still in its preliminary stage and will only proceed after obtaining approval from the Forest Department.

The Taljai Forest spans an extensive area, starting from the canal near Sinhagad Road and stretching towards Dhanakwadi and Wadgaon.

Given the hilly terrain, watering the trees has been a logistical challenge, especially during the summer, when water needs to be transported by tankers.

In a recent assessment, PMC officials, including Prithviraj B.P., visited both the STP near Rajaram Bridge and the Taljai Forest to evaluate whether some of the treated water, which is currently discharged into the river, could be redirected through a pipeline system to irrigate the forest.

The discussions with forest officials are ongoing, and formal communication will be initiated soon to finalize the plan.

The project will only proceed after obtaining the necessary approvals from the Forest Department.

Once approved, a detailed action plan will be drawn up, and the treated water will be supplied through pipelines to ensure a more sustainable water supply for the forest area.

This initiative is seen as a positive step towards efficient water use in the region, benefiting both the forest and the city’s water management efforts.
