Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) initiated a 'Feeder' service to connect metro stations, but it has not garnered the expected response from passengers.

Operational across 13 routes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the 'Feeder' service sees 32 buses traveling approximately 59,602 kilometers each month.

Despite this extensive service, the monthly revenue stands at just ₹17,95,284, with a passenger count of 58,153. The cost per kilometer is ₹105, whereas the revenue per kilometer is only ₹34, highlighting the service's struggle to attract sufficient passengers.

PMPML is currently facing a tough period as the aging bus fleet reduces in number, impacting passenger services and revenue. The 'Feeder' service mirrors this challenge, with declining passenger numbers exacerbating financial difficulties.

Despite launching the 'Feeder' service on 13 routes, commuter response has been underwhelming. With new metro stations set to open soon, PMPML plans to extend the 'Feeder' service to these locations. However, this expansion comes with rising costs, potentially increasing PMPML's financial strain.

PMPML is striving to improve the service's appeal and plans to expand the 'Feeder' service to new metro stations, necessitating an increase in the bus fleet. Dr. Sanjay Kolte, Chairman and Managing Director of PMPML, emphasized the need for more buses to enhance the 'Feeder' service once new buses are acquired.

Feeder Service at a Glance:

  • Routes: 13

  • Daily Bus Trips: 32

  • Daily Bus Distance: 128 kilometers

  • Monthly Bus Distance: 59,602 kilometers

  • Monthly Revenue: ₹17,95,284

  • Monthly Passenger Count: 58,153

PMPML is taking several measures to provide facilities for passengers. Commuters using PMPML buses will soon have the convenience of booking their tickets online from home.

Along with the PMPML, two private companies have developed an online ticketing and bus tracking system for PMPML. Besides, PMPML has created its own app to provide real-time bus information, which is now in its final testing phase.

Through the app, passengers can view bus schedules and book tickets from home. Upon boarding the bus, they can simply show the conductor a QR code to validate their ticket.
