Pune: In a significant move to address escalating traffic issues, the Pune Municipal Corporation has approved the development of two critical DP (Development Plan) roads in the Mohammadwadi and Handewadi areas.

This decision was made during a standing committee meeting held on Thursday (October 10), with an estimated expenditure of ₹88.83 crores allocated for the project.

The initiative aims to enhance the city's infrastructure by developing roads and bridges through private participation under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in exchange for Development Credit Notes.

Specifically, a 24-meter DP road is set to be constructed in Survey Numbers 16 and 8 Part in Mohammadwadi. Additionally, a 24-meter RP road will be developed between Undri Survey Numbers 20, 22, and 26 and Handewadi Survey Numbers 1, 2, and 6.

As traffic congestion intensifies across various parts of the city, the need for broader roads has become increasingly urgent. Many residents have been adversely affected, particularly in areas where road widths are insufficient to accommodate rising vehicle volumes.

To mitigate these challenges, the municipal corporation has prioritized widening the roads listed in the city's development plan (DP). However, the corporation has often faced hurdles due to a lack of sufficient funds to undertake these projects.

In light of this, the decision to implement the PPP model for the development of DP roads and bridges was deemed essential. Currently, work is set to commence on seven DP roads and two flyovers within the city under this framework.

Municipal officials assert that the new infrastructure will significantly improve traffic flow in the affected areas. A proposal to proceed with the development of both roads was presented during the standing committee meeting and subsequently approved under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale.
