Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University has partnered with Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research, Training, and Human Development Institute (SARTHI) to preserve and promote the traditional Modi script through dedicated training programs.

An MoU was recently signed between the two institutions to facilitate this collaboration. The initiative aims to create a trained workforce capable of understanding and interpreting historical documents written in the Modi script, a skill essential for preserving Maharashtra’s rich heritage.

While signing of the MoU, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Suresh Gosavi expressed confidence that this initiative would help in understanding and interpreting our historical heritage by creating a trained workforce.

On behalf of SARTHI, Anil Pawar, Deputy Managing Director of the Pune Regional Office, signed the agreement. Also present were University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Parag Kalkar, Acting Registrar Prof. Jyoti Bhakare, Director of Innovation and Synergy Board Prof. Sanjay Dhole, subject expert Dr. Girish Mandke, Research Officer Manisha Ahirrao, Accountant Kumbhar, Course Coordinator Prof. Babasaheb Dudhbate, and other professors from the History Department.

The University’s History Department offers a course on Modi script and document analysis. Under this MoU, SARTHI will sponsor a batch of twenty students for this course, and the University’s History Department will provide the training.

Anil Pawar informed that under the "Sarsenapati Hambirrao Mohite SARTHI Modi Script Training Project," MoUs have been signed with various universities across the state for Modi script training.

He further explained that, in a broader perspective, the SARTHI organization, which implements schemes for the social, educational, and economic welfare of the Maratha community, considers training in the Modi script necessary to understand the community’s history. This is the reason for implementing this project.
