Pune Cantonment Court to temporarily relocate to Wanawadi

Pune: The historic British-era Cantonment Court building, facing deterioration and space constraints, is set to be temporarily relocated to the Mahatma Phule Cultural Centre building in Wanawadi. The court will begin its operations at the new location starting Thursday, June 27.

The relocation comes in response to the growing inadequacies of the current Cantonment Court facility. The move to the Mahatma Phule Cultural Centre building, a temporary measure, aims to address these issues until a permanent solution is found.

The inaugural session at the new location will be attended by District Judge Mahendra Mahajan and Pune Bar Association President Adv. Santosh Khamkar.

The Cantonment Court, operational since the British era, has seen increasing calls for a dedicated new space in recent years. However, due to the lack of available land, the court's operations will be temporarily shifted to the Mahatma Phule Cultural Building. This temporary relocation aims to ensure the continued administration of justice while efforts to secure a permanent location are underway.

Under the jurisdiction of the Pune District Court, the Cantonment Court handles cases from police stations in Hadapsar, Cantonment, Wanwadi, Kondhwa, and Mundhwa. Currently, the court has a backlog of over thirty thousand cases, underscoring the need for more suitable facilities.
