Pune: In a remarkable inflow, Pune district dams have collectively accumulated 21.77 TMC of water in just two days.
Of this, the four dams in the Khadakwasla cluster (Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla) alone have added 1.82 TMC. This brings the district's total water storage to 114.93 TMC, which is 57.94% of the full capacity.
Pune district hosts a total of 32 dams, including six managed by the Tata Group. Excluding Tata's dams, the remaining 26 dams have a combined useful storage capacity of 198.34 TMC.
The Khadakwasla cluster, which includes the Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla dams, supplies drinking water to Pune city and has a total storage capacity of 29.15 TMC, of which 23.49 TMC is currently filled, marking 80.57% of its capacity.
Other significant dams in the district include Ujani, Bhama Askhed, Manikdoh, Chas Kaman, Pavana, Mulshi, Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, Gunjavani, Neera Devdhar, Bhatghar, and Veer.
Last year, on this date, the district's dams (excluding Tata's) had a total storage of 88.11 TMC (44.42%). This year, they have 26.82 TMC more water, which is a 13.52% increase compared to last year. The four dams supplying Pune city had 19.98 TMC (68.51%) on this date last year. Hence, this year, the Khadakwasla cluster has accumulated 3.51 TMC more water.
Menawhile, following a week of intense rainfall, Pune district is experiencing a reduction in rain intensity. The weather department has forecasted that on Sunday (July 28), the sky will be generally cloudy with light to moderate showers in Pune city and the district. The ghat region might see very heavy rain at isolated places.
On Saturday (July 27), the sky remained cloudy all day, with only one or two light showers recorded across the district. However, strong winds were observed in many places.
Lavasa recorded the highest rainfall in the district at 30 millimeters, while eastern areas such as Daund, Baramati, and Indapur received less than half a millimeter of rain.
For the next two days, cloudy skies, cool winds, and light showers are expected to continue. Across the state, the intensity of rain in the Konkan and ghat areas has also lessened, although steady rainfall continues.
An "Orange Alert" for heavy rain has been issued for the ghat regions of Raigad in Konkan and Satara districts on Sunday. A "Yellow Alert" has been issued for heavy rain at isolated places in Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Kolhapur, Akola, Amravati, Wardha, and Nagpur districts.
