Pune: The Department of Water Resources, Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, and the Central Flood Control Room in Pune have issued an alert due to the increasing water levels in several dams near Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has alerted citizens that 11704 cusecs of water from Khadakwasla dam will be discharged into Mutha river from 10pm today (July 28).

Khadakwasla Dam is currently at 80% capacity, Panshet Dam at 94%, and Temghar Dam at 78%. Pavana Dam, which supplies water to Pimpri Chinchwad, is at 84% capacity. With heavy rainfall predicted for the night of July 28 and early morning of July 29, significant discharge into the Mutha and Pavana river basins is expected within the next 48 hours.

Residents are advised to remain alert and exercise caution. Discharge from the Khadakwasla and Pavana dams into the river basins is already underway, and adjustments will be made based on rainfall and inflow.

Residents of the Pune Municipal Corporation area should avoid entering the prohibited Blue Line Area of the Mutha river basin, and those in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area should steer clear of the Pavana river basin. Immediate removal of any materials or animals from the river basin is required. Residents in low-lying areas are particularly urged to avoid entering the river basin.

The notice emphasizes the need for vacating the prohibited areas of the Mutha and Pavana rivers and maintaining vigilance and appropriate precautions until October 2024.

The alert underscores the importance of public safety and proactive measures during the monsoon season to prevent potential flooding and related hazards.
