Pune Flood Investigations: Water Resources Officers to Face inquiry, says Dr. Neelam Gorhe

Shivraj Sanas

Pune: Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Council, stated that an inquiry into water resources officers will be conducted if guidelines were not followed during the release of water from Khadakwasla Dam, which resulted in flooding in areas such as Shivane and Sinhagad.

Dr. Gorhe interacted with flood victims at Patil Estate and later reviewed the situation with the Commissioner and senior officials at the Municipal Corporation. She instructed the administration to promptly assess the flood damage and provide immediate compensation.

Expressing dissatisfaction with PMRDA's response to the incident at Lavale, she directed them to submit a report within 24 hours and mentioned filing a complaint with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Dr. Gorhe stated, "There is a need to inquire whether the guidelines were followed while releasing water from the Khadakwasla Dam and whether this information was communicated sensitively to the public. An inquiry will be demanded accordingly from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde."

Dr. Gorhe visited the Municipal Corporation on Monday (July 29) to review the flood situation. Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale and senior officials from various departments were present.

Dr. Gorhe questioned why the water from the Khadakwasla dam chain cannot be released during the day, and why such a large release is necessary at 2 AM.

Continuous discussions are ongoing regarding this matter, and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also taken note of the situation, understanding the reasons behind it. She also discussed with the administration the efficiency of the public alert system.

On the city's pending development plan, Dr. Gorhe mentioned, "The city's development plan is prepared but remains pending for many years. Now that the related bill has been passed in both houses, the development plans will be approved in the next six months.

Despite being the Deputy Chairperson, there are limits to my work, but the issue of vacant senior positions in the Municipal Corporation will be presented to the Chief Minister."
