Pune Floods Investigation: Three-Member Committee to Submit Report in 7 Days

Preliminary inspections revealed serious issues in Karvenagar area, where debris was dumped along riverbanks.

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation has appointed a three-member committee to investigate the causes of the recent flooding that submerged over a hundred houses on Sinhagad Road and affected homes in Deccan, Warje, and Shivane.

This decision follows heavy rains and the release of water from Khadakwasla Dam. The committee will include an invited member from the Water Resources Department and is expected to submit its report within seven days.

On July 25, heavy rainfall occurred in the Khadakwasla Dam chain project. Following this, without any prior notice, 50,000 to 55,000 cusecs of water were released at midnight.

This water affected over 200 houses and approximately 1,200 residents in areas such as Etananagari, Vitthalwadi, Nimbjanagar, Warje, and parts of Shivane.

However, the Water Resources Department claims that only 35,000 cusecs of water were released. This raises the question of how such a flood occurred with such a small amount of water.

Preliminary inspections revealed serious issues in the Karvenagar area, where debris was dumped along the riverbanks, and the Bund Garden area, where the river improvement project caused the Mutha River to swell.

As a result, the Municipal Corporation administration will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact causes of the flood. This information was provided by Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P.

MP Murlidhar Mohol had criticized the state Water Resources Department for the floods in Pune, citing a lack of coordination and failure to properly inform residents before releasing large amounts of water from the Khadakwasla dam. Mohol had stated that "no one will be spared and an investigation will be conducted in this matter."

PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale had also pointed fingers at the Water Resources Department for the flooding in Pune.
