Pune: As the Diwali festival approaches, Pune’s markets are seeing a surge in shoppers. Areas such as Raviwar Peth, Bohri Aali, Mandai, and Tulshibaug were crowded on Sunday (October 20), as people flocked to buy festive items.

Compared to the previous day, Sunday saw a much livelier atmosphere in the markets. The weekend presented an ideal opportunity for citizens to shop, resulting in significant traffic congestion across the city, particularly in the central areas after 4 PM, with long lines of vehicles reported.

Shoppers were seen purchasing a variety of items, including home decor products, electronic goods, lanterns, clothing, jewelry, earthen lamps, and rangoli supplies.

This year, 3D lanterns have become a popular choice, attracting a high number of customers. Vendors have rolled out several discounts to boost sales during the festive period, with electronics, jewelry, clothing, and furniture stores offering substantial savings. Shopkeepers noted that these promotions have successfully drawn in crowds.

A noteworthy trend this year is the shift towards eco-friendly Diwali celebrations. Many shops are stocking fabric and paper lanterns, clay lamps, and paper decorations as alternatives to environmentally harmful products.

Tushar Gadre, a local shopkeeper, mentioned that there is a growing demand for such eco-friendly products, as people are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment.

Textile markets, in particular, have seen heavy footfall, especially at stores specializing in ready-made garments and children’s wear. Shops have extended their hours, opening early in the morning and staying open late into the night to accommodate the influx of shoppers.

Customers expressed their excitement about Diwali shopping. Ritika Mohite, a shopper, said, "Shopping during Diwali is something we look forward to each year. Buying things according to our taste doubles the joy of the festival."

Similarly, Rutuja Landge shared, "There’s a different kind of satisfaction in finding the perfect item in a bustling market. It’s a unique experience every time."
