Pune: The names of three major metro stations in Pune are set to be changed following growing demands from the public.
According to Pune's Member of Parliament and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, the names of Budhwar Peth, Mangalwar Peth, and Nashik Phata stations will be officially changed, with the new names soon to be published in a government gazette.
Budhwar Peth Metro Station will be renamed as Kasba Peth Metro Station, reflecting the area's local identity. Mangalwar Peth Metro Station will take on the new name of RTO Metro Station Pune, aligning with its proximity to the Regional Transport Office.
Meanwhile, Nashik Phata Station will be renamed Kasarwadi Metro Station. These changes are part of an effort to make station names more reflective of their locations and landmarks.
A formal proposal for these name changes has already been submitted to the central government. Furthermore, the government has approved renaming the Civil Court Station to Shivajinagar District Court Metro Station, enhancing the station’s connection to key local institutions.
During an inspection of the Swargate Metro Station, which is set to serve as a crucial underground Multi-Modal Hub, Minister Mohol emphasized the importance of the new stations in boosting connectivity and urban mobility. The Swargate Metro Station is designed with state-of-the-art facilities and is expected to open to passengers shortly.
Minister Mohol also highlighted the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for the Swargate to Katraj metro route, a key extension aimed at improving public transport in the city.
Pune Metro currently operates two main routes, with the 15-kilometer Vanaz to Ramwadi stretch already completed. The work on the PCMC to Swargate line is nearing completion, with 90% of the project finalized.
The metro stations at Shivajinagar, Civil Court, and Swargate are set to open soon, pending final technical approvals. Minister Mohol also confirmed the completion of construction work at Kasba Peth and Mandai stations, marking significant progress in the city's metro infrastructure.
