Pune: Midnight Water Release from Khadakwasla Dam into Mutha River

Shivraj Sanas

Pune: Due to continuous rainfall in the catchment areas, authorities began releasing 856 cusecs of water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River starting at midnight on Wednesday (September 4).

The Khadakwasla Dam cluster, which includes the Temghar, Panshet, and Warasgaon dams, has been experiencing steady rainfall since the morning, significantly impacting reservoir levels.

By midnight, Temghar had received 26 mm of rain, Panshet 25 mm, Warasgaon 12 mm, and Khadakwasla 1 mm. Warasgaon Dam, which was already filled to 99.54% of its capacity by 5 PM, surged to 99.91% by midnight.

As a result, authorities released 900 cusecs of water into the Mose River at midnight, alongside 600 cusecs designated for power generation.

In addition, Temghar contributed 275 cusecs and Panshet 600 cusecs for power generation, accumulating a total of 2,375 cusecs released directly for these purposes.

Meanwhile, Khadakwasla Dam was discharging 1,005 cusecs through its canal system. Due to an increase in rainfall intensity after 10 PM, the release rate was adjusted to 856 cusecs from the dam beginning at midnight.

This coordinated water release is part of efforts to manage the rising levels due to ongoing rain showers and to prevent overflow. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as the water levels in the Mutha River are expected to rise further with the ongoing releases.
