Pune on Alert: Khadakwasla Dam to Release Water Amid Heavy Rainfall

Salil Urunkar

Pune residents have been urged to exercise caution as water will be released from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River due to rising water levels following continuous rainfall over the past few days.

The release of 12958 cusecs of water is scheduled to begin at 15:00 PM today. Authorities have warned that the water discharge may be adjusted depending on the intensity of the rainfall and the inflow into the dam.

Citizens are advised to stay away from the riverbed, and any items or livestock in the area should be relocated immediately. Residents in low-lying areas have been alerted, and necessary precautions are being taken. The Khadakwasla Irrigation Department has called for all citizens to remain vigilant and take appropriate safety measures.

In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Maharashtra from Saturday to Tuesday, as the monsoon is expected to intensify.

An orange alert has been issued for extremely heavy rain in 13 districts, including Pune, Mumbai, and Palghar, while a yellow alert has been issued for heavy rain in other districts.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in various parts of the state, with an orange alert issued for the ghat areas of Pune. Similar alerts have been issued for the ghat regions of Kolhapur and Satara, where heavy rains are expected. In urban areas, light to moderate rainfall is likely, while thunderstorms are forecasted for North Maharashtra.
