Pune Police Crackdown Nets ₹12 Cr from Drunk Drivers, 1684 Penalized

Between May 21 and July 8, action taken against 158269 errant drivers. From January 1 to June 30, actions were taken against 1,684 drunk drivers.

Pune: Pune has seen a sharp rise in serious accidents caused by reckless drunk drivers, prompting a rigorous crackdown by the city police. In the past one and a half months, actions have been taken against 1,684 drunk drivers, leading to the collection of ₹12 crore in fines and the suspension of their driving licenses for three months.

Following a tragic accident in Kalyani Nagar on May 19, where a speeding car killed two young software engineers on a motorcycle, the police intensified their crackdown on drunk driving.

The offender, a builder's son, was apprehended and penalized. In another incident, a police officer patrolling the Mumbai-Pune highway was severely injured by a drunk driver.

As part of the intensified crackdown, drivers caught under the influence will have their licenses suspended for three months. Repeat offenders will face permanent cancellation of their licenses, with the help of the Regional Transport Department, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar.

The police have ramped up their enforcement against traffic violators citywide, conducting checkpoints and inspections. Between May 21 and July 8, actions were taken against 158,269 errant drivers, resulting in ₹12.21 crore in fines. Violations included drunk driving, speeding, driving without license plates, triple riding, and wrong-way driving.

From January 1 to June 30, actions were taken against 1,684 drunk drivers, with proposals for their three-month license suspensions sent to the Regional Transport Department. Repeat offenders will face permanent license cancellation.
