Pune: The police have taken steps to prosecute a minor as an adult in connection with a fatal accident that claimed two lives. The incident involved the minor driving a luxury car at high speed under the influence of alcohol.
To move forward with the case, the police have filed an application with the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to have the minor declared an adult, with a decision expected on August 28.
The case stems from an accident in Kalyani Nagar three months ago. While the minor has been granted bail, the parents and doctors involved remain in judicial custody. The police have promptly submitted their investigation report, a necessary step if the minor is to be tried as an adult.
The legal process for declaring a minor as an adult involves a detailed assessment by a committee formed by the JJB. This committee, with the help of psychologists and social workers, evaluates the minor’s maturity, mental state, and physical capability.
If deemed appropriate, the minor can be transferred to a criminal court for trial. The final decision in this process relies heavily on a report prepared by the committee's supervisors, typically within three months.
As the hearing approaches, the completion and submission of the supervisor's report remain uncertain, and an extension may be requested if the report is not yet finalized.
The outcome of the hearing will determine whether the minor will face trial as an adult for the serious charges stemming from the fatal accident.
