Pune: The city and district of Pune are gearing up for substantial rainfall as the monsoon strengthens. Retired meteorologist Manikrao Khule has predicted that from July 6th to July 9th, Pune will experience significant, though not torrential, rainfall.

Lack of strong westerly winds at 700hpa is resulting in clouds are not moving inland. Hence, Pune city is receiving minimal rains despite favourable monsoon conditions, stated weather experts.

The catchment areas of dams, especially the Khadakwasla cluster of Temghar, Warasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla dams, is receiving moderate rainfall.

Rain recorded in last 24 hours ending 8:30am of July 6 is as follows:

  • Mulshi: 70mm

  • Temghar: 69mm

  • Warasgaon: 28mm

  • Panshet: 24mm

  • Pawana: 15mm

  • Kasarsai: 10mm

June saw sparse rainfall in Pune, with only Baramati, Daund, and Indapur receiving notable amounts. However, starting from July 6th, steady rains are expected in Pune, bringing much-needed relief.

Central Maharashtra is currently experiencing light showers, with rainfall measurements ranging from 2 to 5 mm. Nandurbar, Dhule, and Jalgaon districts are still awaiting significant rain.

With the monsoon gaining strength, these areas are also expected to receive increased rainfall. By July 10th, Pune, Ahmednagar, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Solapur districts are forecasted to see moderate to heavy rainfall.

Khule noted that for torrential rains and reservoir filling, the monsoon axis must shift northward from its current position south of its average location over central India. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that July's rainfall would be sufficient to fill reservoirs.
