Pune RTO Steps Up Inspections After School Van Molestation Incident

Ongoing inspection drive will not only focus on vehicle fitness but also include character verification of drivers and attendants.

Pune: In the wake of a recent molestation incident involving a private school van driver, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has ramped up its efforts to regulate student transportation.

Ten teams have been deployed across the city to inspect the condition and legality of school vans operating without proper documentation.

The incident, which occurred within the Deccan Police Station’s jurisdiction, has raised serious concerns about the safety of students being transported in private vans. A driver was reported to have molested a girl student, prompting public outcry and forcing the RTO to take immediate action.

Currently, there are approximately 6,000 school vans and buses in the city, many of which are operating without renewed fitness certificates. Despite these violations, the RTO has previously been accused of neglecting its duties, allowing unfit vehicles to continue operating.

Additionally, overcrowding in auto-rickshaws and private vans has become a common issue, with the RTO seemingly turning a blind eye.

In response to the growing concerns, the RTO has begun a rigorous inspection campaign. Parents are urged to verify the documentation of school vans before allowing their children to travel in them. This includes checking for the presence of female attendants, proper registration with the RTO, and up-to-date fitness certificates.

RTO Pune, led by Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale, has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of students. The ongoing inspection drive will not only focus on vehicle fitness but also include character verification of drivers and attendants, along with strict enforcement of safety protocols.
