Pune: Vehicle owners in Pune are facing yet another financial burden as the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has increased by ₹2 per kilogram.
The revised rate, effective from Friday, November 22, now stands at ₹87.90 per kilogram in Pune and its surrounding areas. This decision, announced by Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) and the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network, comes amid rising input costs for natural gas.
The hike has significantly impacted the operating costs of vehicles reliant on CNG, including auto-rickshaws and taxis, which form a vital part of the city’s transport system.
Many drivers are now worried about the sustainability of their livelihoods. “This increase is unbearable. It’s difficult to make ends meet with such high fuel costs. The government needs to intervene,” said Khalid Shaikh, an auto-rickshaw driver.
The increase also poses challenges for daily commuters and businesses who are already struggling with the effects of inflation. Higher operational costs may force auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers to hike fares, further straining the pockets of passengers.
MNGL attributed the price rise to the growing input cost of natural gas, driven by global instability. Ali Daruwala, spokesperson for the All India Petrol Dealers Association, commented, “This price hike is temporary and caused by global factors. We anticipate a reduction in CNG prices in the coming months.”
Despite assurances, the immediate impact on the common man is evident. With public and private transport in the city heavily reliant on CNG, many are urging authorities to find sustainable solutions to prevent further economic strain.
