Pune: The continuous rainfall in Pune since yesterday has led to flooding inside Yerawada Jail. Water entered the jail premises through the main entrance and inner doors, inundating the ground floor offices. This incident is likely the first of its kind where rainwater has entered the prison.

The prison administration faced significant challenges due to this flooding. With the entire city of Pune already struggling with the heavy rain, the water entering Yerawada Jail has raised questions about the administrative preparedness.

The entry of rainwater into the jail premises is a serious concern, also posing security risks, and necessitating immediate remedial measures. The prison administration has urged the authorities to take swift action to address this serious issue.

The police custody at Rajgurunagar's Khed Police Station, located within the Khed Tehsil office, was flooded with water following heavy rains over the past two days.

Though there were no detainees in custody, the police officers on duty faced a chaotic situation as knee-deep water entered the lockup due to inadequate drainage systems in the city. The officers had to remain alert and active throughout the night to manage the situation.

Recently, a convicted prisoner serving a life sentence had escaped from the open prison in Yerawada. The escaped prisoner, identified as Atmaram alias Atmya Ladkya Bhavar, is originally from Devipada village in Wada taluka, Palghar district.

In 2009, he committed a murder in his hometown, leading to his conviction and sentencing to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 2,000 by the Shahapur Police Station. The court had stipulated an additional six-month imprisonment if the fine was not paid.
