Pune: Recent cases of sexual assault in areas including Koparkhairane, Uran, Badlapur, and Pune’s Bopdev Ghat have revealed that all accused individuals are from other states.

Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, emphasized the need for police to conduct character verification of people arriving from outside the state to prevent further incidents. She also detailed police efforts aimed at preventing the recurrence of such crimes.

On Thursday (October 17), Chakankar met Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar at the Commissionerate to discuss the sexual assault case in Bopdev Ghat.

Additional Police Commissioner Shailesh Balkawade and other officials were present. Following the meeting, Chakankar informed the press that the police are actively taking steps to prevent such incidents.

To enhance safety, 274 hotspots have been identified across Pune where police patrols have been increased. Character verification is being conducted for citizens arriving from other states within the jurisdiction of each police station.

The installation of CCTV cameras is underway, and instructions have been issued to the municipal corporation for the installation of street lights in dark areas. A letter has also been sent to the labor commissioner to register establishments employing more than ten workers.

Chakankar highlighted the need to inform students coming to Pune for education about these high-risk areas. The crime branch is diligently investigating the Bopdev Ghat case, and the Women’s Commission is pushing for the case to be handled by a fast-track court to ensure swift and strict punishment for the perpetrators.

Chakankar has been reappointed to the State Women’s Commission. Meanwhile, Deepak Mankar has resigned from the NCP city president position following the MLC nomination issue. Chakankar mentioned that she had recommended Mankar’s appointment for the city president position, and expressed surprise at his recent statements.
