Pune: In light of the increasing reports of sexual abuse against minors in educational institutions, Seema Sawale, former Chairperson of the Standing Committee of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, has called for the immediate formation of 'Sakhi Savitri' committees in schools across the state.
This comes after a recent shocking incident in a Badlapur school, where two kindergarten girls were sexually abused by a staff member.
Sawale has written to school administrators, stressing the urgent need to implement the government’s March 2022 directive, which mandates the creation of these committees to safeguard students and create a safe learning environment.
Seema Sawale suggested that all teaching and non-teaching staff in the institution must undergo police verification, and their behavior should be regularly monitored.
Moreover, an effective security system should be established in every school, including the installation of CCTV cameras, the appointment of security guards, and the education of students about sexual abuse.
An effective grievance redressal system should also be established in schools to ensure that any complaints are promptly addressed and action is taken against the guilty parties.
She urged schools to maintain regular contact with parents and discuss any issues related to their children. Seema Sawale has personally met with various institutions to press for these measures.
Educational institutions should promptly establish 'Sakhi Savitri' committees in their schools as per the government’s orders. They should also take various steps to guarantee the safety of students.
Seema Sawale assured that the Jijai Foundation is ready to provide full support to such educational institutions. Former Corporator Asha Dhaigude-Shendge was present with Seema Sawale while delivering letters to school principals.
