Pune: In yet another alarming incident, a sandalwood tree was stolen from the premises of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), adding to a series of similar thefts in the city.

This theft took place in the compound of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), located within the university grounds. A security guard at the university lodged a formal complaint at Chatuhshrungi Police Station.

This incident comes just two months after five sandalwood trees were stolen from the same campus. The rising frequency of such thefts, especially targeting valuable sandalwood trees, has become a growing concern for both university authorities and local law enforcement.

The wave of sandalwood thefts is not limited to the university alone. Thieves have been targeting various government institutions, private bungalows, residential societies, and educational campuses across Pune.

Just two weeks ago, sandalwood trees were stolen from a society in Mukund Nagar and a bungalow in the Market Yard area. Additionally, high-profile institutions like the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Raj Bhavan, and the Khadki Ammunition Factory have also fallen victim to these thefts.

Despite the growing number of incidents, Pune police have so far struggled to apprehend the culprits. The recurring thefts highlight the need for enhanced security measures, especially in areas where sandalwood trees are cultivated. These valuable trees are prized for their wood, which is highly sought after, making them a prime target for thieves.

Authorities are urging vigilance and have increased patrols in vulnerable areas, but the continued success of the sandalwood thieves is raising concerns about the effectiveness of current security efforts.
