'Sangli Pattern' in Maval Assembly Constituency: BJP to Campaign Against Ajit Pawar’s Candidate

Resolution passed at BJP event in Maval to refrain from campaigning for Sunil Shelke, igniting speculation about stability of Mahayuti until elections

Pune: The upcoming Assembly elections in the state are set to stir political dynamics as the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi prepare for the battle.

In Maval, BJP leader and former minister Bala Bhegde has initiated opposition against Sunil Shelke, the NCP MLA and candidate from Ajit Pawar's faction.

Recently, a resolution was passed at a BJP event in Maval to refrain from campaigning for Shelke, igniting speculation about the stability of the Grand Alliance until the elections.

During the event, Bhegde invoked the "Sangli pattern," emphasizing Maval's significance as a BJP stronghold and highlighting the consequences of decisions against party workers. He criticized Sunil Shelke, dubbing him an "actor."

Challenges Within the Party

Currently, the Maval constituency is represented by Sunil Shelke of the NCP, which might lead to this seat being allocated to the NCP within the Grand Alliance. This situation has created difficulties for former minister Bala Bhegde, who lost in the last election.

The BJP leaders from Maval have sent a proposal to the state BJP, requesting to retain this seat. Despite Bhegde's interest in contesting, he faces challenges from within the party.

Ravindra Bhegde, the head of the Maval Assembly election, has declared his intention to contest, supported by his followers through banners on his birthday.

Rebellion by Shelke

Before the 2019 Assembly elections, Sunil Shelke, now an NCP MLA, was a BJP member and aspired to contest the elections. However, the party denied him the candidature, opting instead for Bala Bhegde.

Subsequently, Shelke rebelled, contested the election from the NCP, and won by over 50,000 votes.
