SARTHI Students Protest for 100% Scholarships, Halt Office Construction

Salil Urunkar

Pune: Students of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research and Training Institute (SARTHI) have launched an indefinite hunger strike in front of the institute’s Pune office, pressing for their demand for 100% scholarships.

This comes in light of the 100% scholarships granted to students of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute (BARTI) for 2022, which SARTHI students believe they should also receive.

Despite five days of peaceful protest, SARTHI officials have not responded to the students' grievances. Frustrated by the lack of action, the students have disrupted the construction work of the new SARTHI office, escalating their protest by gathering at the newly erected statue of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.

The students have received support from various political organizations, including the local chapters of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, Sambhaji Brigade, and Maratha Kranti Morcha.

Students from several districts across Maharashtra, including Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, Nashik, and Mumbai, have also joined the movement.

Protesters argue that they have been struggling for two years to secure the financial aid necessary for their research. Many of them, especially those involved in scientific research, face significant expenses, and without the scholarship, their work remains stalled.

Some students have expressed deep frustration, questioning the government's neglect towards the Maratha community.

The SARTHI Action Committee has warned that if the demand for 100% scholarships, effective from the date of registration, is not met, they will intensify their agitation.

The committee is calling for an immediate resolution to the issue to ensure that students can continue their research without financial burdens.
