Sassoon Hospital’s Laboratory Earns NABL Accreditation for Quality Healthcare

Pune: Sassoon General Hospital has earned recognition from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for providing high-quality healthcare services through its laboratory.

The NABL certification, awarded on September 11, 2024, has elevated the laboratory’s status, making it the only accredited facility of its kind in Maharashtra.

The Clinical Services Laboratory at Sassoon Hospital encompasses key departments, including Biochemistry, Pathology, and Microbiology, where rigorous testing and research are conducted daily.

NABL's evaluation process involves thorough scrutiny of several critical aspects, such as the laboratory’s testing systems, the quality of tests conducted, sample collection methods, report generation, and record-keeping processes. Meeting these stringent standards has positioned the laboratory as a reliable center for patient diagnosis and treatment.

The Biochemistry Department, led by Dr. Somnath Salgar, plays a pivotal role in this achievement. Under his leadership, along with contributions from Dr. Rajesh Karyakarte, Head of the Microbiology Department, and Dr. Leena Nakate, Head of Pathology, the team’s relentless efforts ensured compliance with NABL's rigorous quality benchmarks.

The laboratory handles an impressive volume of 8,000 to 10,000 tests daily, focusing on vital diagnostics for blood, glucose, urea, bilirubin, and urine, critical for assessing kidney and liver functions.

In addition, the Microbiology Department conducts crucial tests, including those for infectious diseases like COVID-19. With the facility operating 24/7, this constant availability has proven invaluable for timely patient diagnosis and care.

Prof. Dr. Somnath Salgar expressed his pride in the laboratory’s accomplishment, explaining that NABL’s evaluation process in June involved verifying the strict adherence to protocols for sample collection, testing procedures, and report delivery.

“The certification reflects our commitment to quality and ensures that test reports reach physicians on time, enabling prompt treatment decisions," he added.
