Sewage Overflow on MG Road Causes Distress; Pune Cantonment Board Unresponsive

Salil Urunkar

Pune: The main drainage line near Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar statue on MG Road and adjacent to Hotel Grand has become severely clogged, causing sewage to spill onto the road and fill the area with a foul odor.

The issue has been persisting for the past 15 to 20 days, despite repeated complaints from local residents and business owners, including Bhojraj Belani, the owner of Hotel Grand.

The overflowing sewage has led to a significant increase in mosquitoes, creating an unhealthy environment for residents and visitors alike. Belani expressed frustration over the lack of action from the Cantonment Board, despite numerous complaints made via email and phone calls.

To resolve this problem, they paid the municipal corporation INR 1000 to bring a jetting machine, but the workers informed them that the pipe could not go further. Despite multiple complaints to the Cantonment Board via email and phone, there has been no response.

Belani stated that the problem of sewage overflowing onto the road is a persistent issue in the area. This has led to a very unpleasant environment, posing a threat to public health. Due to the strong stench, they are forced to wear masks while sitting.

Belani also mentioned that the Pune Cantonment Board has only undertaken superficial work to address the issue, which quickly reverts to its original state. Additionally, a large excavation in the area has raised further concerns, as no information has been provided about its purpose.

Repeated attempts to contact Pramod Kadam, the Health Inspector of the Pune Cantonment Board, have been unsuccessful.
