Sharad Pawar Meets Sunita Kejriwal in Pune: Is AAP Eyeing an Alliance with MVA?

Salil Urunkar

Pune: As political preparations ramp up for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, a significant meeting between Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar has sparked widespread speculation.

The meeting, which took place at Modi Baug in Pune, also saw the presence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh.

The discussion between Sunita Kejriwal and Sharad Pawar lasted for about 30 minutes. This interaction has fueled rumors that AAP might consider joining the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance for the upcoming state elections. The MVA currently comprises the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, and the Congress.

The speculation surrounding AAP's possible entry into the MVA comes on the heels of the alliance's strong performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.

The NCP (SP) secured 8 seats, Congress won 13, and the Uddhav Thackeray faction bagged 9 seats. However, it remains unclear whether this meeting signals a shift in AAP’s strategy, as the party had earlier indicated plans to contest the Assembly elections independently.

Preeti Sharma Menon, AAP’s Mumbai President, had recently stated that while the INDIA alliance was formed for the Lok Sabha elections, it was not intended for the state elections. She confirmed that AAP intends to field candidates for 36 seats in Mumbai.

As the political landscape evolves, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for August 23, where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea will be heard. Meanwhile, AAP is also gearing up for the upcoming Haryana elections following the Central Election Commission’s announcement.
