Pune: Shrinivas Society, located on Katraj-Kondhwa Road, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by inaugurating a 48-kilowatt solar power project, setting a precedent for other housing societies in the region.
This forward-thinking initiative not only addresses the society’s energy needs but also highlights the potential for substantial financial savings and environmental benefits.
The solar project, which is expected to save the society approximately 1 million rupees annually, was launched in a ceremony attended by key figures including entrepreneur Nitin Chordia and Magraj Rathi, Managing Director and CEO of Mahesh Nagari Multistate Co-operative Society.
The project represents a considerable investment of around 2.4 million rupees, with the cost per watt estimated at 50,000 rupees.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this project is its impact on the society's electricity expenses. Currently, Shrinivas Society faces monthly electricity bills ranging from 95,000 to 100,000 rupees.
With the new solar power system in place, these costs are projected to drop by 90%, reducing the monthly bill to just 4,000 to 5,000 rupees. The generated electricity will be used to power common areas and essential services such as water pumps, making the society nearly self-sufficient in terms of energy needs.
This initiative stands out not only for its financial prudence but also for overcoming significant financial challenges. Initially, the large-scale project faced hurdles due to its high upfront costs.
However, Mahesh Nagari Co-operative Society stepped in, offering to provide the necessary loan under reasonable terms, provided the society met the required documentation. This support has been crucial in bringing the project to fruition.
During the inauguration, entrepreneur Nitin Chordia praised the society’s members for their determination in overcoming financial obstacles to complete the project.
He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in today's context, stating, "Setting up solar power projects is the need of the hour, and Shrinivas Society has set an excellent example. I urge other societies in the area to follow this lead and adopt sustainable energy solutions."
The Shrinivas Society project not only marks a significant achievement in sustainable energy but also serves as a model for other housing societies aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs.
By investing in solar power, the society is not only securing its energy future but also contributing to broader environmental goals, demonstrating that with the right approach, large-scale sustainability projects are both achievable and beneficial.
