Signature Campaign: Citizens Demand Removal of BRT on Pune-Nagar Highway

Salil Urunkar

Pune: In Wagholi, a growing number of citizens are calling for the removal of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the Pune-Nagar highway, particularly from Dargah to Viman Nagar.

The Traffic Control Committee spearheaded a signature campaign today, garnering support from approximately five thousand residents who believe the BRT infra is causing more harm than good.

The committee argues that the BRT system, in its incomplete state, is responsible for severe traffic congestion and frequent accidents. They assert that the BRT is not effectively serving passengers, and its removal is necessary to alleviate the inconvenience faced by citizens.

A memorandum containing the five thousand signatures will be submitted to the Pune City Traffic Department and the Pune Municipal Commissioner.

The committee has issued a warning that if action is not taken to remove the BRT, they will organize a public protest, which may culminate in the dismantling of the BRT infrastructure.

Committee members Hemant Bhatte, Dilip Devkar, Ashok Jadhav, Kailas Sonawane, Bapu Shinde, Mahesh Badakh, Arun Thite, Shivajirao Shinde, Prakash Dongre, and Hanumant Waghmode are leading the charge in this campaign.

They argue that the incomplete BRT system is a significant contributor to traffic woes and accidents, and its removal is essential for smoother traffic flow.

However, the movement is not without opposition. Some critics argue that the push to remove the BRT is politically motivated and fails to consider the daily needs of millions of commuters who rely on the BRT. They claim that the partial removal of the BRT has only exacerbated traffic congestion, wasting commuters' time.
