SPPU Blocks PRN of Students Missing Exam Deadlines, Confusion Prevails

Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has blocked the Permanent Registration Numbers (PRNs) of several students after the completion of the session period required for exams, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. This action has led to significant confusion and concern among the students.

The university is currently gathering data on the number of affected students in Pune, Ahmednagar, and Nashik districts who may be unable to sit for exams due to their PRNs being blocked.

This development follows a similar situation last year when SPPU, after consultations with its governing body and receiving UGC approval, provided two exam opportunities for students whose PRNs had been blocked.

At that time, approximately 125,000 students were at risk of missing their exams, but around 86,000 were eventually allowed to take them. Of these, about 34,000 to 36,000 students successfully passed all subjects, enabling them to earn their degrees and avoid academic setbacks.

For students pursuing degree courses, it is mandatory to pass exams within a specified timeframe. However, many students have struggled to do so within the allotted session, resulting in their PRNs being blocked, and thus preventing them from registering for future exams.

The university is now collecting detailed information from colleges on these students. Once the data is compiled, SPPU plans to engage with the UGC to determine whether these students can be granted another exam opportunity.

The outcome depends on UGC’s approval; if granted, the exams will proceed, but if denied, no further exams will be held for these students, according to senior university officials.
