Pune: The Swargate bus station will soon be equipped with 42 new high-quality and advanced CCTV cameras, in addition to the 18 cameras already in place. These new cameras will include night vision capabilities, ensuring better surveillance even in low-light conditions.
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) administration, in collaboration with Swargate police, will conduct a joint survey to identify optimal camera locations, helping to address gaps in the current security setup. This strategic initiative aims to enhance surveillance and provide better support to police investigations.
As part of a larger initiative, the MSRTC plans to install CCTV cameras at major bus stations across Maharashtra. The estimated cost for the entire project is around ₹120 crores, with ₹10 lakhs allocated for the Swargate station upgrade alone.
Currently, the positioning of existing cameras at Swargate has proven inadequate, with many installed in poorly lit areas. This has made it difficult for police to effectively investigate crimes.
Recognizing these challenges, the ST administration has decided to conduct a joint survey with the police to determine strategic locations for new camera installations.
Pramod Nehul, Divisional Controller of Pune ST Division, confirmed that the cameras being installed would be of superior quality and equipped with advanced features. "This step has been taken to ensure stronger passenger safety," he said.
Passengers have welcomed the initiative. Shivani Pawar, a commuter, said, "The ST administration must prioritize passenger safety, especially for women. Increasing the number of CCTV cameras is a good move. The police should also take necessary steps to prevent theft incidents at bus stations."
The survey for identifying suitable locations is expected to begin in the coming days, marking a significant step toward creating a safer travel environment for commuters.
