Pune: Two individuals were arrested by the Cyber Crime Department of Thane Police for making obscene posts about Rupali Chakankar, the President of the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Women’s Wing.
Chakankar, a prominent figure in Ajit Pawar's faction of the NCP, had earlier submitted a list of 32 individuals to the authorities, accusing them of posting vulgar content about her on Instagram and Facebook.
The Thane Police Cyber Crime Department acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of Sunny Parkhe from Gangapur and Jagannath Hate from Chunabhatti, Mumbai.
Both men face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 72/2024, 354D (stalking), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Earlier, Chakankar had been the target of similar offensive material shared on social media, prompting the Pune Cyber Police to file a case.
During the investigation, authorities arrested Vasant Rameshrao Khule, a 34-year-old resident of Rahati, Parbhani district. He was detained after police discovered his involvement in spreading the objectionable content.
Khule’s phone was seized, and his statement was recorded by the Cyber Police. He was issued a notice as per the Criminal Procedure Code. Another individual, Pradeep Kanse, was also issued a notice for posting obscene comments online.
Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of these cases, stating that actions like this serve as a warning to others who misuse social media platforms to harass or defame individuals, especially public figures.
