Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar provided updates regarding the ongoing investigation into the sexual assault of a young woman at Bopdev Ghat.

He announced that two suspects involved in the case have been arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend the third absconding accused.

"We will soon capture the third suspect, and we are increasing police patrols in the hilly areas around the city to enhance citizens' safety," stated Commissioner Kumar.

The Crime Branch successfully arrested the second suspect from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with the support of the local police. The police are conducting a thorough interrogation of the suspects currently in custody, while multiple teams have been dispatched across various parts of the country to locate the third accused.

The commissioner emphasized the importance of collecting strong scientific evidence to ensure that the perpetrators receive the harshest punishment.

The process of appointing a special public prosecutor for the case has already begun, and the charge sheet will be filed promptly. Kumar also confirmed that efforts are being made to expedite the trial through a fast-track court.

Focus on Lawrence Bishnoi Gang Links

While addressing concerns about the Lawrence Bishnoi gang’s possible connection to Pune, Kumar noted that the investigation into the murder of former State Minister Baba Siddiqui is being handled by the Mumbai Police.

Since the suspects in that case are in Mumbai Police custody, Kumar refrained from commenting further. However, reports have surfaced linking the suspects to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, and their presence in Pune has been speculated.

The police are monitoring individuals associated with the gang, and legal action will be taken as needed, confirmed Kumar.

Increased Security Ahead of Elections

In preparation for the upcoming assembly elections, police have established numerous checkpoints across the city to prevent any disruptive activities.

"We are ensuring transparent compliance with the model code of conduct, and all necessary security measures are being taken," Commissioner Kumar added.
