Pune: In an effort to promote cleanliness and unity, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has announced a state-wide initiative to clean and illuminate 5,000 temples before Diwali.

The campaign will also include the ceremonial worship of saffron flags, carried out by young couples from various communities. The initiative is being organized by the VHP’s Mutt Mandir Division of Maharashtra-Goa and will take place on Sunday, October 20, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Sanjay Mudrale, head of the Maharashtra and Goa religious division of VHP, made the announcement at a press conference attended by Kishor Chavan, West Maharashtra Province Minister; Dhanaji Shinde, Head of the Temple Priest Division; and Suryakant Thorat.

The VHP emphasized that temple cleanliness, from the sanctum sanctorum to the courtyard, is essential to maintain the sanctity and beauty of these holy places.

Chavan highlighted that temples are open to all sections of society, offering space, respect, and opportunities for everyone. The worship of saffron flags by young couples is intended to foster a sense of unity and connect the younger generation with temple traditions.

He also called on temples to take inspiration from the Diwali tradition of home illumination and extend it to temples through cleanliness and lighting.

Shinde encouraged citizens to visit their local temples and participate in the cleanliness drive. He stated that efforts are underway across all four provinces of Maharashtra to ensure the campaign reaches a large scale.

Women trustees, priests, devotees, and followers of various sects have taken the lead in this initiative, with the Federation of Priests also actively participating.

The campaign, which last year covered 550 temples, has since led to the formation of dedicated temple cleanliness groups, many of which now provide regular cleaning services.
