Pune: A confrontation between MNS workers and a non-Maharashtrian chemist in Dhanori has brought attention to the respect for the Marathi language.

The incident occurred when the chemist argued with a Marathi customer, saying he does not understand Marathi and questioned if speaking in Marathi was a rule. His refusal to speak Marathi and his arrogant behavior led MNS members to intervene.

The incident, which happened two days ago, was captured on video and widely shared on social media, causing a stir across the state. MNS workers visited the business establishment in Dhanori, where the confrontation took place.

Observing the worker's disrespectful attitude towards the Marathi language, the MNS members decided to take action.

Present at the scene were Ganesh Patil, Arun Yewale, Manoj Thokal, Achyutrao Molavde, Krishna Mohite, Kailas Gavhane, Sagar Khandve, Siddharth Wanjari, Kiran Pakhare, and Shubham Mahindarkar. Ganesh Patil remarked that the worker's contemptuous remarks about Marathi necessitated a response.

He emphasized that it is inappropriate for migrants to conduct business in Maharashtra without respecting the local language. The Marathi language will be defended vigorously, and protests will continue if necessary. It has been reported that the worker has since apologized and has been dismissed by his employer.

MNS workers had staged a protest on JM Road in December 2023, following the lapse of the Supreme Court’s deadline for the implementation of Marathi boards on shops in the state.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had also issued a warning, stating that punitive action would be taken against establishments failing to display Marathi signage. On November 29, the Pune Municipal Corporation issued an order authorizing action against retailers who had not complied with the directive to display Marathi name plates or signages.
