Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will conduct a survey to assess the damage caused by recent floods in Wadgaon Sheri, Dhanori, Lohegaon, and Yerawada.
Minister Uday Samant assured the State Legislative Assembly that flood victims who meet the criteria will receive assistance. The PMC will also be directed to implement a time-bound program to prevent recurring flood situations.
NCP MLA Sunil Tingre of Wadgaon Sheri raised concerns over persistent flooding in Pune, particularly in the Wadgaon Sheri Assembly Constituency.
Tingre noted that heavy rains in early June led to flooding in areas such as Laxminagar, Vighnaharta, and Sai Park in Dhanori; Ganga Kunj in Kalas; Laxminagar and Yashwantnagar in Yerawada; Inorbit Mall, Gardenia, Shubham, and Anand Park Society in Wadgaon Sheri; Rakshaknagar in Sainikwadi Nagpurchawl, Lohegaon; Dadachi Vasti, Lunkad Amazon, and Tuljabhavani Nagar in Viman Nagar.
These floods caused significant damage to homes, particularly affecting poor families by destroying household items, furniture, and school supplies.
Despite substantial municipal spending on drain cleaning, clogged lines continue to exacerbate flooding during monsoons. MLA Tingre called for a government survey to provide compensation to affected residents and the implementation of preventive measures to avoid future flooding.
MLA Tingre accused the PMC of diverting and blocking drains to benefit builders, which has contributed to the flooding issues. He demanded detailed information on the number of drains blocked and diverted over the past five years.
Minister Samant responded by committing to a survey of the affected areas and compensating those who meet the criteria. He also promised to instruct the Municipal Commissioner to convene a meeting with MLA Tingre to devise permanent flood prevention strategies.
