Pune: An elderly woman lost her life after a speeding dumper truck collided with the motorcycle she was riding on with her son. The tragic incident took place late Saturday night around 10:15 PM near the market ground on Wagholi-Avhalwadi Road.
The deceased, identified as 66-year-old Alka Junagade from Wagholi, succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash. Her 36-year-old son, Piyush Junagade, who was riding the motorcycle, was seriously injured.
According to police sources, the mother and son were en route when a dumper truck, driven at high speed, struck their vehicle from behind. The collision proved fatal for the mother, while her son was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries.
The driver of the dumper, Rahul Shivaji Lokhande, aged 40, a resident of Khandve Nagar in Wagholi, has been booked by the authorities.
The incident has sparked concerns among local residents about the reckless driving of heavy vehicles in the area.
Despite restrictions on heavy vehicle movement during peak hours, drivers often exceed speed limits to maximize their trips. This has resulted in numerous accidents, many of them fatal.
Citizens have expressed frustration over the lack of enforcement and are calling for stricter measures to control vehicle speeds and prevent distracted driving, especially by those using mobile phones behind the wheel.
Pune City Traffic Police have announced a ban on heavy vehicles at 30 key traffic intersections and locations from from 9 AM to 10 PM. This ban targets heavy vehicles such as trucks, dumpers, and concrete mixers, emergency service vehicles are exempt.
