Pune: Students of the Warkari tradition studying at the Bhamchandra Dongar pilgrimage site were assaulted by a gang of youths after they reprimanded the youths for inappropriate behavior with girls. The local community has strongly condemned the incident and is calling for strict action against the attackers.

Bhamchandra Dongar, located in the Vasuli area, is renowned as a place of study and spiritual significance associated with Sant Tukaram Maharaj. Devotees from across the state have resided here for years to engage in study and contemplation. Currently, about 30 to 40 students are studying at this site. However, on June 16, a young couple engaged in indecent behavior was confronted by Kuldeep Shivgonda Khot, a Warkari student. In response, the youth verbally abused and assaulted him, and later returned with friends to inflict further violence.

The assault resulted in a broken leg for Khot, while another accompanying student was also injured. Both students are receiving treatment at a local private clinic. The Bhamchandra Dongar Saptah Committee has denounced the incident and demanded strict action against the perpetrators.

Bhamchandra Dongar has been frequented by drinkers and couples, who have previously threatened many devotees. This recent assault has heightened fears among the students studying there. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The investigation is being led by Senior Police Inspector Nitin Gite of Mhalunge Police Station, with Police Constable Prakash Navale and his team handling the case.

Shankar Maharaj Marathe, a resident of Bhamchandra, stated, "These incidents are unacceptable. Such events did not occur in the past. The police and local residents must work together to maintain control over the area. The community's demand for action underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of those at the pilgrimage site."
