Pune: The relentless pressure of work, coupled with continuous demands from superiors and the expectation to work even on holidays, is becoming a significant source of stress for employees across various sectors.
Freshers, in particular, are feeling the effects of this intense workload, with growing concerns about how it is affecting their mental health. Alarmingly, the stress caused by excessive work pressure has, in some cases, proven fatal.
One such incident recently came to light when 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, a Chartered Accountant employed at the multinational firm Ernst & Young (EY), passed away, allegedly due to work-related stress. Anna's mother claimed that the enormous workload and constant pressure had severely impacted her daughter's mental and physical health.
A letter written by Anna’s mother to the company, which subsequently went viral, has sparked widespread debate and concern over work culture in the corporate world.
Mental Health
Experts Weigh In Mental health professionals warn that stress in the workplace is a growing issue that can have severe consequences if not addressed in time.
Dr. Archana Jawadekar, a senior mental health expert, noted that a wide range of factors can contribute to stress, including personal issues, strained relationships, and, notably, work pressure.
In many workplaces, particularly in high-pressure fields like IT and finance, unrealistic expectations from superiors, excessive workloads, and long working hours are taking a toll on employees.
According to Dr. Jawadekar, constant overtime work and the burden of managing large projects can disrupt both the physical and mental well-being of employees, often leading to a breakdown in their daily routines.
Recognizing and Addressing Stress
Recognizing the signs of stress early is crucial to prevent more serious health issues. Symptoms like fear, anxiety, heart palpitations, and a sense of being overwhelmed are all indicators that the body and mind are struggling to cope with the pressure.
If addressed early, stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation, and maintaining a balanced social life can help alleviate these issues. For employees, acknowledging the stress and finding ways to manage it are key to coping with the pressures of modern work life.
Dr. Jawadekar advises that maintaining a positive outlook, seeking help from supportive friends, and getting professional guidance when needed are important steps in managing stress effectively.
