Workload and Stress Pushing Employees to Opt for Smaller Companies

In pursuit of these bonuses, employees often work extra hours, leading to heightened stress levels.

Pune: In large corporations worldwide, employees are facing growing pressure due to the need to meet tight deadlines and earn incentive bonuses.

The recent death of Chartered Accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, reportedly due to a heart attack, has brought attention to this issue. Her mother has claimed that Anna’s death was a result of the overwhelming stress caused by her job, holding the company accountable.

These major corporations handle projects from clients across the globe, with a key focus on delivering them on time. Completing projects ahead of schedule often leads to higher payments from the client.

To motivate their employees, companies offer incentive bonuses based on how efficiently the work is done. However, in pursuit of these bonuses, employees often work extra hours, leading to heightened stress levels.

In addition to completing projects, employees are also encouraged to acquire new clients. Under the "Project Partner" initiative, they are rewarded with a share of the project fee when they bring in new clients. This adds to the already mounting pressure, with senior employees sometimes receiving specific client acquisition targets.

While these large companies offer excellent learning opportunities, the high-pressure environment is a significant concern, particularly for newer employees.

Many newcomers struggle to cope with the stress and leave their jobs within a few months. Those who manage to strike a balance between the workload and the pressures of the job tend to stay longer, but the pressure remains substantial.

After several years, many employees opt to move to smaller companies, where they experience reduced stress and often receive better pay. Industry experts point out that the number of employees staying in these large corporations for more than five years is notably low, as many seek a healthier work-life balance in smaller firms.
