Pune, known for its historical significance and vibrant cultural life, is also home to the famous Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj, which draws visitors from all over Maharashtra.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been working on an ambitious project to bring zebras to this zoo, aiming to attract even more tourists. However, the much-anticipated arrival of these striped animals might be delayed.

The PMC had completed the construction of a special 5,000-square-meter trench for the zebras, spending ₹1.5 crore on the project. The zoo management has long believed that Pune's weather conditions are suitable for zebras, adding confidence to the plan. Yet, a new development has put the project on hold.

Pune Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, has directed the garden department to consult an expert committee before making a final decision. The committee’s report will determine whether or not zebras will be brought to Pune.

Originally, the zoo had planned to source the zebras from Africa. India has a high demand for zebras due to their popularity, and acquiring them was expected to make the Pune zoo a more attractive destination, especially since no zoo in Maharashtra currently houses zebras.

Mysore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kevadia zoos have successfully introduced zebras, which has helped increase tourist footfall in those areas.

Despite initial progress, the PMC faced a setback when a contractor, who had bid on the tender to bring the zebras, failed to meet international standards. This led the authorities to restart the procurement process.

Now, plans are being made to import zebras from Europe and Israel. The PMC intends to acquire four zebras—two males and two females—each around three to four years of age.

While the project’s completion has been postponed, the PMC remains optimistic that once the committee approves the plan, the zebras will soon arrive and make Pune the first city in Maharashtra to host these exotic animals.

The delay has disappointed many residents, but the introduction of zebras to the Katraj zoo could enhance its status and increase tourist interest, making it a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts in the region.
