Puducherry Assembly Elections 2021: The possible future leaders of the UT

Total list of candidates across parties contesting for Puducherry Assembly elections this year

Najooka Javier

After the V Narayanasamy-led Congress government fell in Puducherry on February 22, the union territory is currently under the President's rule. But with the upcoming assembly elections of 20201, there is hope for a new leader in the beach city. For the upcoming Puducherry (BJP) assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party has released the list of candidates that will contest elections. The ruling party of India is contesting elections in the union territory in alliance with N Rangaswamy's NR Congress and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

According to the previous reports, NR Congress will be contesting on 16 seats, while BJP will be contesting with nine seats. AIADMK has five seats in total. Yesterday, both BJP and AIADMK released a list of candidates for the polls.

Total seats

The Puducherry constituency has a total of 33 seats. Of these, 30 are elected by the people, of which five are reserved for the Scheduled Caste candidates. The Centre nominates three candidates through Lt Governor.

Candidate details

Vivilian Richards Johnkumar from the Nellithope Assembly constituency has been fielded by BJP as a representative. This constituency was previously represented by the former CM V Narayanasamy.

AIADMK also released its list of five candidates for the assembly elections. These segments are divided into four seats in Puducherry and one in Karaikal.

Surprisingly the list released by Congress does not contain the name of the former CM Narayanasamy. Also, of seats allotted to Congress, the party has not yet revealed the candidate for the Yanam constituency.

How do the elections affect the rest of India?

While Puducherry is a traveller's paradise in India, the ruling party will definitely be of importance to the entire country. The ruling party will impact the travelling norms and rules set by the union territory. The city also houses one of the most famous ashrams in the country that attracts a lot of tourism.

Pondicherry also houses various small to medium scale industries, which will directly impact consumers and travellers. Since the city has a travel based economy, the change in party will heavily affect how tourism plans out for the city in the coming years.
