Pune: Maharashtra on Monday became the seventh state in India to hit by Bird Flu.

The flu also known as Avian Influenza was confirmed Maharashtra after 900 hens were reported dead in Parbhani district.

The scare caused by the bird flu reported in Maharashtra has started impacting the beleaguered poultry sector. Prices of eggs and poultry products (chicken) have gone down by major margins. In the past week, wholesale prices of chicken in Pune city are decreased from Rs 80 to Rs 60.

Prices of eggs too have witnessed a decline to around Rs 500 per 100 eggs. The price drop comes at a time when bird flu hit multiple states in the country. After making good business during winter, poultry industry experts believe that the situation is temporary and everything will return to normal in a few weeks.

One of the poultry products selling shop owner who wished to stay unnamed said, "After making its impact in Maharashtra, bird flu has caused fear among people. Though eggs and poultry products do not affect directly to humans for the flu, people fear of consuming non-veg foods which directly affects our business."
