Grim milestone: Pune records over 10,000 COVID-19 cases in past 24 hours

Pune district on Saturday reported over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases

Pune: The second wave of COVID-19 is not flattening its curve in Pune as district on Saturday crossed a grim milestone.

Pune district, the epicentre of the novel virus on Saturday reported a total of 10,827 new cases. Of the new cases found, 5,720 were reported from Pune city (Pune Municipal Corporation) followed by 2,832 from Pimpri Chinchwad (Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) while total 2,275 were recorded from Cantonment and rural areas.

Daily cases summary of COVID-19 in Pune district

A total of 31,196 samples were tested on Saturday, of which 20,066 were from Pune city while, Pimpri-Chinchwad also saw 5,981 tests while 5,149 were from conducted in Pune Rural and cantonment areas.

A total of 54,971 patients in the district currently are in home isolation, of which 33,849 are from Pune city. On the positive front, a total of 6,496 patients recovered from the infection on Saturday and overall, 4.8 lakh people have recovered so far.

With 66 fatalities reported from the district, a cumulative total of COVID-19 deaths now stands at 10,163, according to the health department. Of the total 66 deaths, 35 were from Pune city while 10 from Pimpri Chinchwad.

On Saturday, Pune District Information Officer, Rajendra Sarag also lost his life due to the contagion.

Pune, the worst affected district in India has also enforced a 'mini-lockdown' to curtail the further spread. This came after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar took the stock of the COVID-19 situation in the district on Friday. Die to rapid surge, the administration has decided to close all non-essential services such as theatres, shopping malls, restaurants, cafes and more.
