Kothrud-Bavdhan now emerging spot in Pune’s COVID-19 saga

For the past week, Pune has reported an increase in positivity rate leading to a spike in the number of active cases.

Pune: The PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) registered a jump in the number of newly infected Covid-19 cases by recording 766 positive cases on Thursday. Maximum cases were reported from Kothrud-Bavdhan ward and lowest from Wanawadi-Ramtekdi ward as per February 25.

For the past week, the administration has reported an increase in positivity rate leading to a spike in the number of active cases.

According to the administration, maximum number of new cases were reported in Kothrud-Bavhdan ward at 87, followed by 75 in Hadapsar-Mundhwa, 66 in Dhankawadi-Sahakarnagar and 65 in Warje-Karvenagar.

Senior official from PMC said, “The area with less positive cases earlier is now showing an increase in cases now. Kothrud-Bavdhan too is one such example. The testing has been already increased in the area. While, there are number of people from other wards who come and undergo tests here. This is one reason of increasing cases.”

“Also there are some slum-pockets in the area where the infection can be transmitted easily. We have started taking preventive measures as well as taking action against those violating COVID-19 norms,” he added.

One of the resident from Bavhdan area said, “Our area was entitled as Green Zone during the peak of COVID-19. The area is currently witnessing a surge is a serious concern. Even thought the administration is putting efforts to curtail the spread, it is duty of every citizen of the ward to assist the civic body by following all COVID-19 restrictions.”

Mayor Murlidhar Mohol who also hails from Kothrud area recently hinted that the civic body might reintroduce micro-containment zones in the most affected areas of the city if the number of daily new cases does not go down.

Meanwhile, city on Thursday reported 766 new cases taking the total cases cross two lakh mark. With four deaths in one day, the death tally now has reached 4,841 in the city. On the positive front, 391 people recovered from the contagion with total recovery cases now standing at 1,91,691.
