Now, no witnesses needed for property deed registration

ST CORRESPONDENT

PUNE: Officials of the Stamps and Registration Department has kickstarted the new process of property registration. For this new process,  the State Government will be relying on verified Aadhaar credentials of the parties to the property agreement, instead of asking them to produce two witnesses at the time of registering documents.

An official from Stamps and Registration Department said that earlier property buyers had to bring two witnesses and then submit thumb prints. “Now the buyer does not have to go through the hassle. The move will also help in decongesting the zonal registrar offices,” said the official.

On an average, about 8,000 documents are registered in the State daily. The government, though, will now have to ensure that the Sub-Registrar’s offices have high-speed Internet and other infrastructure for online validation of Aadhaar.
