PMC to check compound walls of societies

ST CORRESPONDENT

PUNE: Despite Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) issuing guidelines on construction of compound walls in 2013, most developers are ignoring them. Now, the corporation has decided to issue notices and check compound walls to avoid any further incidents in the city.

Prior to the Kondhwa incident, there were two tragedies were reported in the city due to collapse of compound walls. In 2013, three women died after a compound wall collapsed. After that, recently on Thursday, there was another incident registered in Parvati area where one woman died.

After the 2013 incident, PMC's Building Permission and Development Department issued guidelines on how to construct a compound wall.

As per the guidelines, every society or individual bungalow should have to construct the wall in RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete). The design should be made by the architect and should be submitted to PMC. The height should be of minimum two metres. The wall should be constructed at the plinth checking stage, and only after the formal checking is done, the developers will get further permission for construction.

While speaking to Sakal Times, PMC city engineer Prashant Waghmare said, “We have given instructions to all officials to send notices and check status of compound walls of societies. They will send notices in the coming days.”

PMC official said that while submitting the building plan, the developers or architects only show a normal wall with no specific design. They only mark the outer line of the wall in the plan.

However, according to guidelines issued in 2013, developers or architects need to specify the width, height and RCC wall design as per area of construction, and then only, the corporation will approve the plan.
