PMC submitted application under best practices entries

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received the Best Practices Award to Improve The Living Environment 2017-18 of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for Pune Street Lighting project under Private Public Partnership (PPP).

HUDCO has also appreciated JM Road rejuvenation project under Pune Street Inclusiveness of Urban Street Design guidelines which was initially  criticised by public and opposition parties.

HUDCO is a public sector undertaking under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation.

The PMC submitted its application under best practices entries for the HUDCO award. On Wednesday, Dr M Ravikanth sent a letter to the PMC regarding the award.

The award will be presented on Wednesday, April 25. Both projects were introduced by then Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar.

Smart Street Lighting Project
Smart Street Lighting Project under Private Public Partnership (PPP) includes replacement of 77,800 conventional street lights to energy efficient LED lights and existing manual-based feeder panels to SCADA-based energy monitor and control panels.

This project is the first-of-its-kind in a PPP mode taken up by any corporation in India where there is no financial burden on either the PMC or citizens for replacement and maintenance of street lights.  All expenditure will be taken care of by the developer, Tata Projects Ltd through its subsidiary Ujjwal Pune Ltd.

All the street lights in PMC limits will be controlled from a single location of command and control room. A facility will be created so that  citizens can log on to a mobile application or dial a toll-free number for complaints regarding street lights.

Ramdas Taru, Executive Engineer of Electrical Department of PMC said, “We have completed the project and around 2,500 street lights are being controlled through a central command.”

Redesigning of JM Road
The PMC has redesigned Jangli Maharaj Road in with manicured flower beds, cycle track and better lighting, two-wheeler parking space, one-way stretch more friendly to pedestrians and physically challenged, wide ‘pedestrian-friendly’ plazas, designated spots for street vendors, small shops and food outlets along with toilets.  The PMC has spent more than Rs 10 crore for redesigning JM Road.
