Poor street lighting in Erandwane affects residents

Sarita Chahar

Pune: The otherwise calm and quiet Erandwane area off Karve Road is in the news from last few months for all the wrong reasons.

After dog biting incident involving noted Marathi novelist Mangala Godbole, now, the residents here are struggling with poor street lighting.
The fear of stray dog bites also continues as no action has been taken against them so far.

The LED lights which have been fitted in the area emit poor light. Besides, many of these lights get covered with branches of the trees.

Rahul Jadhav (name changed), a resident, told Sakal Times said, “There are no proper street lights in this lane from past four months. It is not only the street lights in our lane but also the adjacent roads. Similarly, once it is dark, we cannot walk out on the road because of stray dogs.”
He also added, “I tried reaching out to the corporators and I visited their offices too, but it all in vain as they keep assuring that the problem will be sorted out in a couple of days.”

Another resident, Amogh Phadke, said, “The area becomes completely dark at night and terrorises us as unknown people roam here during late hours. Many couples come and get cosy here making walking at night very uncomfortable.”

Manjushri Khardekar, Corporator from Warje-Karvenagar spoke to Sakal Times on the issue. She said, “I have taken up two to three letters to the concerned authorities at Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). There is no problem with the street lighting but LED lights emitting low energy seem to be faulty. We were planning to replace the lights but currently, they are not available with the PMC. Further follow-up revealed that the supply from the contractor is irregular and hence, the problem persists. But we will ensure that the problem is resolved in a month.”
